Senseco Systems - Apprenticeships - Investing in the Future

Apprenticeships – Investing in the Future

Senseco are committed to our Apprenticeship Programme, investing in the future of our business and our industry.  We recently welcomed our new apprentices, Ben and Joe, along with their parents, to our offices to sign their apprenticeship contracts and meet the Senseco team.  Their apprenticeship journey will encompass all departments within the company, alongside studying for their Trailblazer Apprenticeship in Fire and Security to get a good all-round understanding of our business and the Fire and Security industry.  The Directors of Senseco are all ex apprentices and we have many apprentice success stories within Senseco.  There are several colleagues within the business that started with Senseco as apprentices and are now in sales, finance, service administration, minor projects and service engineering roles.  Below, we catch up with our third-year apprentices starting their final year before going into their chosen role.

Lewis – Currently in the Sales Team

Lewis has worked around the business experiencing a variety of hands on / site-based roles and office / administration roles. Lewis has realised he is more suited to an office based or sales role.  He is naturally confident and charismatic which works well in a sales environment and has enjoyed meeting clients, carrying out surveys and putting quotations together for system alterations and minor projects.  He is learning the art of balancing client demands for a quick turnaround of quotations, whilst also ensuring they are technically accurate.

Jamie – Currently in the Minor Projects Team

Jamie has enjoyed working in a variety of roles during his apprenticeship and is currently in the minor projects and system alterations team.  He now has his own company van and is proving to be a very valuable member of the team, working in this busy environment.  He is always helpful and quick to learn and working in this team gives a good exposure to the many different systems that we support and includes installation, commissioning and problem solving.

Alex – Currently in the Service Team

Alex is currently working in the service team and we caught up with him when he was working nights in a prestigious, landmark building in London, where he was working as a second engineer.  He was paired with one of our fully qualified engineers, who not that long ago completed this Senseco apprenticeship.  Many apprentices go on to make great engineers in our various engineering teams, but as the above shows, we have apprentices who end up in a variety of different roles within the company.

We support apprenticeships, with the directors of Senseco being former apprentices in the fire and rail industries.  We take on new apprentices each year across the business in a variety of office and field based roles.  We have former Senseco apprentices who have risen through the ranks to senior positions within the company.
Whilst Senseco has been in business for 10 years, the directors and many of the staff have worked together for many years before this.  We have a close knit team who are looking forward to the next 10 years in business and beyond.

Seasons Greetings To All Our Clients

We would like to thank all of our clients for their support during the year and pass on our best wishes for the festive season.   2018 has been an amazing year for Senseco.  Our big focus for the year has been customer service and we have made many improvements to our processes and ways in which we interact with our clients to raise customer service to the next level.  We have retained and won many prestigious maintenance contracts in various sectors including commercial buildings, hospitals, data centres and hotels.  We have also secured some major projects including new build residential blocks at Wood Wharf (adjacent to Canary Wharf), various system replacements and migrations in existing working buildings and a variety of water mist and gas extinguishing projects for generator enclosures and critical areas.  We have carried out a variety of seminars and CPD presentations on such diverse subjects as fire suppression / extinguishing systems, false alarm reduction and fire system legislation.  We also launched our new website, corporate brochure, case studies and British Standards guides.  We’re looking forward to working with you in 2019

Christmas Jumper Day At Senseco

The Senseco Team were pleased to wear their best woollies to support Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 14th Dec to raise money for Save the Children.  This was the latest in a line of themed days we’ve had this year to raise money for charity. We recently had our spooky Halloween coffee morning with an impressive array of costumes to raise money for the ‘You Can’ Youth Cancer support charity.  In August to celebrate our fabulous summer we held our Hawaiian themed dress down day with some colourful costumes, to raise money for Cancer Research.  Any excuse to dress up (or dress down) and the Senseco team are in!  We also supported and sponsored a number of our client’s charity events including the Synecore Golf Day which raised enough money to buy a Variety Club Sunshine Coach.  We also sponsored the kit for the CBRE Hauts-de-France Bike Ride which was a three-day, 300 mile, cycle through the hills of Hauts-de-France to raise funds for Action for Children

Call Out Cover Over The Festive Period

The Senseco head office closes shortly after lunch on Christmas Eve and reopens on Wednesday 2nd January 2019. However, we have our call out service operational and engineers on standby for emergency call outs during the festive period as part of our 24 / 7 / 365 back up service to our clients.  Just use our normal call out number of 0845 644 2888 for emergencies during the festive period, or at any other time.

Fire Safety Seminar: 22nd Nov 2018 London

We are running an afternoon seminar in a private members club in Covent Garden on fire safety which provides essential information for specifiers, end users, facilities management companies, consultants and contractors.  Spaces are limited so please e-mail seminars@sensecosystems.com to book your space.  There have been many high-profile fire incidents in the last two years – but what have we learnt from them?  This seminar discusses important issues on fire safety and focuses on the key areas below.

Legislation, Compliance and Standards

We will highlight some of the key recommendations from the “Hackitt report” i.e. “Building a Safer Future – Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety”. We will discuss what you need to do to keep compliant with the law and provide information on fire safety legislation and fire system standards.

Maintenance and Competence

Under fire safety legislation any and all equipment installed for the purposes of fire safety must be maintained in good working order, which must be carried out by a competent person.  The importance of effective maintenance cannot be stressed enough, but not all maintenance contracts are equal.  We will discuss the important things to look for with fire system service providers and maintenance proposals.

Detecting Real Fires and Reducing False Alarms

It is vital that real fires are detected quickly to provide the fastest response to ensure the safety of all building occupants.  But it is also vitally important to minimize unwanted alarms as these can lead to complacency and waste fire service resources which can also lead to fines.  We will discuss various detection technology and measures to reduce unwanted alarms.  We will demonstrate false alarm immune detection where we offer our FAITH (False Alarm Immune TecHnology) guarantee.

Fire Detection and Suppression

Venue: South Downs Centre, North Street, Midhurst West Sussex, GU29 9DH

With recent high-profile fires, the issues of fire detection and fire suppression have never been more prominent in people’s minds.  The need for compliant systems to effectively detect fires and suppression systems to control or extinguish them to protect people and property is of paramount importance.

Fairness, Inclusions & Respect Ambassadors

We are pleased to announce that Senseco has two Fairness, Inclusion and Respect Ambassadors.  Emma Manuel and Hannah Gibson from our HR team attended an FIR workshop run by the Supply Chain Sustainability School and have become FIR ambassadors for our business.  The construction industry in general and the fire and security industry specifically, are facing an unprecedented skills shortage.  It is important that we attract and recruit from the full pool of talent including those groups who have traditionally been under represented.  Our goal is creating better workplaces that are fairer, inclusive and more respectful so they are positive places to work where everyone feels safe and supported, able to achieve their maximum potential and be part of an exciting and rewarding industry.

Women in Construction

Zoe Richardson, one of our Project Managers, has a degree in construction management and is a member of Women in Construction.  Zoe started as an administrator on a construction site 15 years ago, progressing through different roles including quantity surveyor and various work placements during her degree studies.  She has been in the fire and security industry for the last 9 years and in her role as Project Manager for Senseco is currently managing some very high-profile contracts including some new build projects at Wood Wharf, the latest Canary Wharf development.

As well as attending seminars, Zoe has been out to local Colleges and Universities carrying out lectures on Women in Construction.  At a recent lecture at Mid Kent College she was letting young women know that there were various choices and careers in construction / engineering.  It is not all about being on the tools.  Saying that, Zoe is no stranger to rolling her sleeves up and “mucking in” on site when deadlines need to be met!

Somerset House

Somerset House is a heritage property dating back to 1547 in the heart of London. Although it is well known for it’s outdoor skating rink at Christmas and open air concerts in the summer, it has many other uses and accommodates many other tenants. It hosts the UK’s largest creative community working globally across art, technology, business and social enterprise.

The South Wing of Somerset House had a mix of hard wired fire detection system, an obsolete radio / wireless fire detection system and many aspiration systems, most no longeroperational. The project was to replace all of the systems in the South Wing with a single fire detection system for all areas and provide graphical representation of this wing and two other wings with legacy systems on a single graphics platform.

This was all to be carried out within a listed building with mixed use and different tenants with minimal disruption to day to day operations.

Castle Mall

Located in the centre of Norwich City, Castle Mall shopping centre comprises of 60 stores and food outlets, across five levels of retail and leisure, including an 8-screen Vue cinema. The centre also boasts a 790 space multi-storey car park.

The fire detection and alarm system installed in the shopping centre was a Honeywell FC90 system, which was closed protocol and had reached the end of its working life. A replacement system was therefore needed to provide a modern supportable system for the shopping centre.

This is a working shopping centre so minimal disruption to the operation of the shopping centre, retailers and shoppers was of paramount importance.
