Maidstone Mall
Senseco Systems was commissioned to replace the existing fire detection system at The Mall, a busy shopping centre in Maidstone, Kent.
With 535,000 square feet (49,700 m2) of floor space, The Mall has 75 shops, ranging from independent retailers to large department stores. It has about 30,000 daily visitors, and up to 50,000 during the Christmas season.
The Mall wanted to replace its 32-year-old conventional fire detection system with a new, addressable one, to enable it to continue providing a safe and secure environment for both visitors and staff.
The Challenge
The Mall required a system that was versatile, modular, within budget, and not at risk of becoming outdated. Plus, it needed a solution that would allow the system to be upgraded in the future.
Another hurdle was that we had to replace the old fire detection system in phases, without interrupting business operations. At the same time, it was crucial the safety of the shopping centre and its occupants was guaranteed throughout the process.
And, to add to this challenge, the first phase of the migration began shortly before Christmas.
The Solution
The Cerberus PRO fire protection system, by Siemens, was the ideal choice for the project thanks to its flexibility, advanced technology and intelligent tools.
In the first phase, we replaced the control panels. Then, for the second phase, we put the detectors and alarm infrastructure into operation.
We maintained the old system throughout the installation process. And we carried out the phased migration of the system, including testing at completion, without disturbing the day-to-day running of The Mall, while the people at the shopping centre were safe at all times.
We installed a total of six networkable control panels and replaced 350 old detectors. We increased the number of the field devices to 600, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, multi-sensor detectors, sounders, manual call points and special detectors.
The Result
The Mall was delighted with the outcome. We completed the project on time, within our client’s budget and without disturbing the business operations.

The Mall has the benefit of a system with an extended life cycle and advanced fire detection technology. Plus, all future additions, such as voice alarm, can be easily integrated.
